When should we talk during EMDR processing?

So last week I talked about how we should really try and stay out of the way as much as possible during processing and how hard it is to do this when we first train in EMDR https://theemdrsupervisor.com/how-much-should-we-talk-during-emdr-processing/. This week’s post may feel a little like a contradiction as we talk about to intervene and the use of interweaves. It’s a very fine line between knowing when to stay out of the way and let Read more…

How much should we talk during EMDR processing?

Anyone else find it just so hard when starting off on our EMDR journey to just stay out the way of the EMDR processing? 🙋‍♀️ I am generally fine with it now but it wasn’t always the case and there are still the odd moments when I ‘forget’ and find myself talking too much.  So this is one of those chicken and egg things really. I’m not quite sure what  came first, seeing some good Read more…

6 months of writing an EMDR blog

Wow here we are in the last week of June 2020, for me that marks 6 months of my blog. It was New Years Eve 2019, it had been a year that I had never experienced and this day was a good time to reflect. I can’t really recall whether I had planned to start writing a blog but this was the first intentional blog that I had written. I wasn’t sure how it would Read more…

What’s involved in my EMDR supervision packages?

I have been on such a journey these last few months, out of which the supervision I am offering is evolving. In November 2019, I left my NHS post, a post that I had been in for 17 years. There are many things I want to write about this time but surprisingly I find myself still overwhelmed with emotion and disappointment, feeling let down by a system that seemed too big to care. So one Read more…

EMDR UK Conference 2020

The EMDR Association did an amazing job and provided what was planned as an in-person conference virtually this weekend. I honestly think they did amazing to face all those technological challenges and just get in there, they definitely took the leap. It reminded me of the leap we all had to take in working online, see my vlog about this https://youtu.be/5mSnuObo938 The main speakers were Dr Arne Hofmann and Dr Maria Lehnung talking about EMDR Read more…

Is there any point to becoming Accredited/Certified EMDR therapists?

My nephew (who lives with me) often gets really cross when I ask him to help out with the cleaning. He always argues “What’s the point?” My standard answer to this is that there is really no point …. to anything really …. Unless of course it is important to you. I want to live in a house that’s tidy(ish) and clean(ish) and to him at 19 this is not important. It really strikes me Read more…

What makes an effective EMDR therapist?

I was really surprised to read some research recently that suggested that therapists begin to decline in effectiveness the moment they start practicing therapy post training. Wow, this is a pretty shocking claim and actually quite scary. But let’s have a think about it. We do our standard training in EMDR and begin to get our head round things such as the Adaptive information processing theory, the standard 8 phase, 3 pronged approach to treatment Read more…

How do you know when you are ready for EMDR Accreditation?

I mean, how do you ever really know when you are ready for something? Do you have a plan and work towards that goal (for example Luke Skywalker becoming a Jedi)? Or did it just suddenly happen, you found yourself there and someone telling you you were ready (Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games).  There’s a big difference between these positions. For me, I want to set my goal and then work out the steps Read more…

What to do when EMDR doesn’t work?

I have a strong memory of sitting in my initial training in EMDR and feeling it was very evangelical (I even wrote that down in my workbook and still have it to remind myself now!). By this I felt that everybody was super enthusiastic about it and it was presented almost in a similar way to how I had viewed religion. “Follow me, I am the light, I am the way” was a phrase that Read more…
